Tax preparation, planning & advisory
More than data entry
Anyone can type numbers into tax software. We work as your tax advisor and partner. We learn your business, your rentals and your goals, help you think through decisions when they come up, and plan with you throughout the year instead of only reacting at filing time. We prepare federal returns and returns for every state. Hawaii is home and a specialty, since its tax rules are complicated, and because we also resolve IRS and state tax problems, we know where returns and decisions tend to go wrong.
Preparation
Accurate federal and state returns, for any state, prepared with your whole picture in mind.
Advisory
Helps when a decision comes up, like a new entity, a rental or a letter from the IRS.
Planning
Year-round planning, so decisions are made on purpose, not after the fact.

Tax questions don't wait for April. These are the ones business owners, high earners and rental owners bring to us most.

Reasonable compensation and payroll projections
Set a reasonable salary for S corp owners and project payroll taxes before you run payroll.
Quarterly estimated taxes
Work out what to pay and when, federal and state, so you are not surprised at tax time.

Learn more →Rental and real estate questions
Depreciation, passive activity rules, buying or selling, and cost segregation, a study that identifies parts of a building that may be depreciated faster.
An IRS or state tax letter arrives
Talk to us before you respond. We explain what the letter means and what to do next.
Tax planning
Plan ahead, all year
Once the year is over, most tax decisions are already locked in. Planning throughout the year gives you a chance to make them on purpose.
Tax projections during the year
Check where you stand as the year unfolds, not just in December, so there is still time to adjust.
Buying or selling property
Think through timing, depreciation and what a purchase or sale could mean for your taxes before you sign.
Buying or selling stocks
Look at the tax side of selling investments, gains and losses, and timing before you trade.
Retirement planning
Saving for retirement, and for those nearing or entering it, how withdrawals, Social Security and other income may be taxed.
Life and business changes
Starting a business, getting married, a new job or equity grant, or a move to another state.
Hawaii-specific items
Plan for Hawaii income tax, GE and TAT, Hawaii withholding when a nonresident sells Hawaii property, and where Hawaii rules differ from federal rules.
Enrolled Agents, licensed nationwide
Our Enrolled Agent license comes from the IRS, not a state board, so we can prepare returns and represent taxpayers in all 50 states, wherever you live.

FAQ
A few common questions
How is this different from just getting my return prepared?
A return records what already happened. As your tax advisor and partner, we also look ahead. We learn your business, rentals and goals, help you think through decisions when they come up, and plan with you throughout the year. Tax resolution is a big part of our work too, so we know where returns tend to go wrong.
Can you prepare S corp, LLC and partnership returns?
Yes. We prepare business tax returns for S corporations (Form 1120-S), partnerships and multi-member LLCs (Form 1065), and sole proprietors, along with the owners' federal and state personal returns. Hawaii GE and TAT filing is available as a separate service.
Do you help with rental property taxes?
Yes. We prepare returns with rental income and expenses, depreciation and passive activity rules, for properties in Hawaii or other states, and help you think through cost segregation, purchases and sales. Hawaii GE and TAT filing for rentals is available as a separate service. Hawaii GE & TAT help.
I'm a high-income W-2 earner. Is tax planning worth it?
Often yes when income, equity compensation, estimated taxes or a move between states make the return more complex. We walk through your situation on a free intro call so you can decide what help you need.
What's the difference between an EA and a CPA?
Both are respected credentials, and both can represent taxpayers before the IRS. Enrolled Agents are licensed by the IRS itself, which authorizes us to represent taxpayers before the IRS in all 50 states, and our work centers on taxes. CPAs are licensed by state boards of accountancy and can generally practice in other states under mobility rules, and many CPA practices also include accounting and audit work. The right fit depends on what you need.
